Here you can find the results of our practical tests
of cameras or lenses with Nikon F or Z Mount
We have been waiting for a focal length range like this for a long time. In practice, 35mm is often not enough, especially indoors, and 75mm in the longest range is often not enough. The new Z Zoom now offers exactly the missing mm and does so with a constant light intensity of f/4. In addition, there is a freely assignable function button on the lens. (We use this for 3D-Continuous) The speed of the autofocus is sensational,
For 20 years I have been reaching my limits at focal lengths of 600 mm and above. Either there was no AF, the lens was too heavy or it was simply impossible to keep the lens in the frame when moving objects were being captured. That has changed dramatically in the last few weeks. After an extensive test in Düsseldorf, it was clear that I had to have this lens. It is unbelievable what Nikon has developed here. A gem in the lens world. Fantastic handling, extremely fast and precise focusing and imaging performance that will melt your mind. Rich colors, soft bokeh and crisp sharpness where it belongs. I have rarely been so impressed from the first photo.
Finally, in October we got the news that our Z 9 had arrived and what can I say, it was worth it. A real development compared to the D6 with the icing on the cake, the new autofocus system. Finally, you can set focus points right down to the last corner. The sensor has been improved again and absolutely silent photography is extremely important for us as concert photographers.
The Plena from Nikon is an exceptional lens. High-quality feel, plus 2 function buttons that you can assign yourself. (We opted for AF-C with eye detection) The rear ring is used to set the aperture and is very useful for portrait shoots in our workflow. However, the imaging performance and the bokeh are particularly noteworthy. The photos all have their own look, which is characterized by a buttery smooth transition in focus. It leaves a lot of room for maneuver up to the open aperture of f1.8. Yes, it is not lightweight, but at 995 grams and with optimal weight distribution, it is very easy to handle.
So far we have been using and appreciating the F-Mount 85mm f1.8 and were therefore very excited about this test. The F-Mount has nothing to hide in terms of sharpness, but the new Z 85mm f1.2 is a class better in terms of bokeh and the transition in focus at open aperture. The difference between f1.2 and f1.8 is also greater than initially expected. This is particularly noticeable indoors and is very much appreciated for portraits. The autofocus is also a touch faster. The disadvantage is the significantly higher weight and size.
Another very good lens with great bokeh and impressive sharpness. f1.2 offers a huge amount of flexibility and the good weight distribution in combination with the Z8 or Z9 means that you can even take handheld shots at 1/15. The advantage of the display button is not really apparent. A second fn button would have been desirable, especially for the Z9. The weight of almost 1100 grams is also quite a lot for a 50mm lens. It is therefore not a "take-always-with-you" lens, which is a shame because the image quality is really impressive.
